Promoting a better understand of the phenomenon of labour migration and related issues such as transnational families and children left behind must be the starting point for all our efforts to increase the number and the quality of the Actions addressed to the protection of our target group.

In this section we collect relevant researches, reports, and other documents from EU and national institutions, related to CLB phenomenon and migrant families.

UNICEF, in collaboration with the Special Unit for South-South Cooperation of UNDP, ILO, and UN/DESA has initiated policy research and operational pilot survey work on the impact of migration on the left-behind in two countries, namely Albania and Ecuador. This briefing note is organized as follows: first, it presents an overview of the instrument; second, it addresses main areas of discussion concerning the sampling strategy recommended for the implementation of the pilot survey in two countries; third, it presents an overview of the progress made in the field so far; lastly, initial lessons learned and proposed next steps are presented.

This paper aims to address the issue of children’s and women’s migration from a human rights perspective by highlighting: (i) the particular situation of children and adolescents within the migration – development nexus, (ii) the gender perspective at all stages of analysis and programming and (iii) the significant gaps within legislation and policies, that inhibit the formulation of effective and rights‐based responses relating to children, adolescents and migration. Moreover, this paper outlines a comprehensive rights‐based approach to migration from a child, gender and nondiscrimination perspective.

In October 2008 TEPSA therefore organised a conference in Brussels on “Effects of EU Enlargement” in collaboration with its member institutes. Speakers contributed to the first part of the conference by presenting research results on the effects of accession on the new member states, particularly in the economic, social and foreign policy fields. In the second part of the conference, these results were synthesised and analysed from a comparative perspective, also with regard to effects on the EU as a whole. The purpose of this publication is to present the conference’s results and to identify future challenges both for research and policy-making.

The research tackled the migration phenomenon preponderantly from the qualitative perspective, in order to capture the subtle aspects of the experiences of migrants’ children, and to understand the impact of separation from parents at the level of each child, taking into consideration the social context specifi c to him/her.
